What do you want?

When you’re thinking about your life and looking forward, do you know what you really want?

Knowing what you want is the important thing.  Not to worry about the ‘how’… but to keep focused on the outcome, what you want to happen and not get bogged down in the nitty gritty of how it will become your reality.

It’s good for you to have some clarity about what you really want.  Most of us know what we don’t want and struggle to know what we do want.  As you’re reading this, I know you are wanting to gain higher self esteem and confidence.  Imagine how different your home life, family life, career, finances etc will be once you have built these up - these are your reasons for building your self esteem in the first place.  If you are unclear about what you want and maybe there are some grey areas in your thinking.  You’re not alone, so many clients struggle with this and they book me for a coaching session or more.  If you’d like to devote some special time to exploring and discovering just what you do want, email me at ali@daringdamsels.com this is your life, you deserve it to be a fulfilling and happy one!

So, whatever you want or dream of, get into the habit of asking yourself – or even praying to a higher power for an answer every night before you fall asleep.  Ask for the way to be shown to you.  You may well wake up with more ideas – write them down and keep pen and paper by your bed ready.

What I’ve started doing more recently is keeping a diary just to record the bursts of inspiration.  So often we do not do anything with this information or ideas which come from our higher self/Universe and yet they are the very gifts which will guide us on our path.  Today I looked at my diary again and had already forgotten to take action on some points – so I was so grateful for having recorded them.  That’s what we all do, we get the messages, think wow and then we forget them, so I urge you to keep a record of them and begin taking action.

The way to achieve your dreams may not seem probable or realistic at first glance, it does not mean that it is impossible, just open your mind… and be aware that sometimes the way will be shown in a less likely way than the obvious.

Quote of the day

”Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.” Mary Kay Ash

Wishing you all you wish for yourself

Have you checked out your ‘Super Powers’ lately?

Posted in Goal Setting, gratitude, Personal Development.

Wow, the big freeze continues to chill the UK – more snow to come tonight and sub zero temperatures.

Isn’t it wonderful how when we’re in crisis everyone pulls together for the greater good?  There was on old lady of 89 years on the television last night saying how neighbours had been checking in on her, making sure she had everything.  She said how marvelous it was – “I didn’t realise people were bothered about me until now.”  It warms my heart.  I only hope that these neighbours keep up the contact once the thaw sets in and beyond.

Also, what warms my heart are the stories I hear on the news about villagers helping out their neighbours getting an extra loaf or pint of milk for each other, the stamina of the guys gritting our roads, the shops that are keeping open to serve the local people, the power line workers repairing the frozen power supply ‘things’ ;) to get the power back to thousands of homes – the meals on wheels co-ordinators/delivery people ensuring those less able are still receiving their hot meals.  The roadside assistance heroes, emergency services – these people must be the most welcome of sights when you’re cold and in trouble.   My postman has continued delivering letters everyday – he walks 4 miles to the post office before he starts his round.  Pushing the trolley of letters he says is challenging in the snow, but he keeps on.   I feel an immense sense of gratitude for the kindness and stamina of these ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Isn’t it amazing what we can achieve when the chips are down?  How the combined spirit of challenge makes the mountain that needs climbing seem less daunting? How we can go the extra mile when we’re tired, if we really want to?  Sometimes we get a ‘second wind’.  Often when we feel like we’re facing an uphill challenge, it’s easier not to bother and quit.  When you push through your comfort zone you find it stretches further and further out – like a balloon that one’s expanded the first time never shrinks to its original size.  Within each and everyone of us we have massive inner strength – yes, all of us.  These are like our own ‘Super Powers’ – we can achieve much more than we think we can!  When we know a job has to be done, we draw on these powers and the good news is – we don’t have to wear our pants on the outside of our trousers ;)  we just become unstoppable!  Isn’t it great?   I admire these ladies and gentlemen for their courage, determination and inner strength. What wonderful stories they will be telling future generations about the extreme winter of 2009/2010!

When you’re working towards achieving your goals, how will you cope with the challenges that lay ahead?  When will you draw on your ’Super Powers’?  What will you be saying to yourself?  How will you find the strength to keep going?  How important are your goals?   Who will you help along the way?  Who can help you?  Who can encourage you to go the extra mile?   If I can help – message me or go to www.daringdamsels.com or www.alisoleil.com for more information!

Sending you all a big warm hug on this bitterly cold day! :)

I urge you – please give yourself 10 minutes today, to watch and reflect on this….

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLN2k0b3g70&feature=player_embedded]

You have to admire Will Smith – Don’t you?

He’s not just an awesome actor whose charisma oozes from the screen - he’s a fine role model to all generations… In this video of clips posted on youtube, he shares snippets of his philosophy.  It blows me away to hear him talk with such PASSION, enthusiasm and COURAGE.  I get shivers down my spine.

This is a man who not only walks his talk, he’s proof it works.  He is a driven individual who HAPPILY focuses on what he wants – he CHOOSES not to sweat the small stuff… stays on track with CONVICTION in his belief that he can achieve.  Does not listen to the doubters and MAKES it happen.

What a powerful man.

What can we learn from him?  How easily do we forget our dreams?  Decide we ‘can’t do it’? Make excuses for not achieving?  Even put some blame on others… Do you know anyone who does that?  Do you believe in yourself?  What goal can you say you will achieve this year – with total courage and conviction? Mmm… something to think about…

Designing your life – or Watching EastEnders

I can remember being a small child and wondering what my life would be like in the year 2000… I wondered what I’d look like and used to practice pulling faces in the mirror trying to imagine… oh the age of innocence…  and how time flies….

Here we are at the start of 2010 – not only the beginning of a new year, but a new decade of adventure and possibility!

Many people begin to plan in January for their year ahead – holidays, new car, new home and house extensions… blah blah bah… but I wonder how many people give the same amount of time to planning their life?

Looking at glossy holiday brochures is wonderful, you can escape the cold and rain and imagine being on a beach for a week or two … feeling free and relaxed… but I wonder if you ever spend time the same amount of time or more…. imagining your life and really planning what you want to achieve, how you want to grow as a person.   Life is a journey – do you want to be the driver or the passenger?  Do you want to choose an interesting, scenic and exciting route or leave it to chance and have a snooze in the back?

Often we make short term plans – fun interruptions in our lives; we dot in the holidays and the things that give us excitement or something to look forward to – but how would it be if we made a decision to plan a bit further ahead?  Rather than life developing and us existing… we can choose to make things happen the way we design them instead of leaving it all up to chance?

When you set your goals for this year – push out of your comfort zone – plan for the decade! See yourself in 2020! How does that sound to you?  Does it feel little scary?  Question that for a moment…. what make it feel like that?  This is your life.  You want the best for your family and friends – why not for yourself?

How to set you goals for 2010 – 2020

1st Step

Choose a time when you are feeling peaceful, relaxed.  Free of interruption.  Get yourself in a positive state, open to possibilities.  Write a list of things of what you are proud to have achieved during 2000-2009.  List them down and quietly reflect on them.  If it helps you, write the years in a list and write beside each one.  Feel the feelings of achievement bubbling up :)  give yourself a metaphorical pat on the back… well done you!

2nd Step

What did you do during these years that were the ‘icing on the cake?’ Make a list.  What gave you your greatest sense of joy?  Who was there?  What happened?  How did it make you feel?  What photographs do you treasure of those moments?  Go and have a look at them… and relive the feelings, sounds and sights…

3rd Step

Think about the areas in your life that are important – list them down eg career, environment, personal development, fun & recreation, relationship with friends/family, significant other, spirituality etc.  Consider where you are with each right now, today.  Give each one a score out of 10, with 1 being low and 10 being high.  How would you score your satisfaction with each area?

4th Step

Think about how you would like to change each area – what would make it a 10?  What would ‘10’ be like for you?  How would it feel?  Close your eyes if it helps… imagine, dream… design… paint a picture in your imagination of how you’re choose to change things.  Imagine if Aladdin’s genie gave you 3 wishes… how would you use them to change your life?  What if you had more than 3 wishes, how would you use them?  Drift into your imagination, what can you hear, what can you smell, taste?  Who is there?  What are they doing?  How bright is the picture?  Turn up the colour… adjust the volume so it’s right.  What difference would it make to your life?  How would it affect your relationships?

5th Step

Put the list in an order of priority.  Which area of your life needs action most urgently?  When would you like to have this achieved by?  Set dates for the other areas, being realistic – but being true to you.

6th Step

What is the first step to achieving your goals?  Who can help you?  What resources do you need?  Where can you get these?  What additional learning do you need?  Where can you find out about this?  When are you going to begin?  How important is this goal?

7th Step

Why are you doing this?  What is motivating you? If you do not have a big enough reason ‘why,’ you will find yourself falling off the wagon… like many new year resolutions people make, it will be overlooked and your life will be left to chance once more.  How do you want to feel when you look back in 10 years and remember the dreams you once had, that you didn’t ‘bother’ to achieve?  Decide how important this is to you, your family… choose to make it a priority in your life.  Many of my clients come to me because they have goals, but they know unless they are accountable or spend time each month focusing on their goals with me, their coach – they will give up on them.  And they are serious about changing their lives, using goal setting strategies to get what they want.

8th Step

Who will you share your goal with?  Be careful here.  I have found that if we are too free with our excitement about how we’re designing our lives – others do not always support us and try to prick our bubble.  Sometimes, friends and family like life to be the way it is and that’s that.  They do not want anything to change.  It can be that they do not want to see us start something and then fail.  If they love us they will want to protect us.  Others may think it’s best for us to take a more conventional route or do things the way they did.  Each person is a unique individual with their own set of life situations and challenges.  If we listen to and take on board negative comments of others, we’re bound to struggle to achieve our goals.  We must have belief in ourselves, determination and adopt a success strategy that works for us.  We must be clear about why we’re doing this and what the outcome will be.  Share your goals with people who will support you, encourage you and be inspired by you.  Keep focusing on the ‘why’ and the outcome.  This is another reason why deciding to have a coach can be crucial to your success – a coach will keep you on track, will believe in you and will encourage you to dig deep to find the solutions to your action steps.  It is a powerful union.

9th Step

What will you do to remind yourself daily of your goals and your commitment to yourself?  Some clients of mine choose to write themselves a statement which they keep in their wallet or handbag which they look at each day.  It could be something such as:

“It is 3rd January 2020 and I am sitting on my porch of my dream beach house with my loving partner, watching the sun setting over the ocean.  We are sipping cocktails and planning our next holiday together.  We feel healthy, safe and secure.  I live in abundance of all good things and my life is perfect.”

It is important that this statement is personal, set in the future with a date and conjures up the feeling you will have once you are living the life you’ve designed.

Some clients choose to design a ‘dream board’ which is board covered with cut out pictures of how their life is going to be, what they will have, what they will be doing or what’s important to them.  They will look at the board every morning and every night – looking at the pictures and choose to imagine the feelings of having those things now.  This is an incredibly powerful way of speeding up the goal process – ideas will come to you during the night as your mind continues to dream while you’re asleep – you will wake up often with new ideas of how you will make this goal your reality.

10th Step

Each month, ideally on the first week day or weekend look at your goal list.  Look at what you’ve achieved.  Praise yourself, treat yourself if you like J  Feel good about how you’ve moved forward.  The changes you can see now, the way this makes you feel.  How your positive actions are affecting your state of mind.  Decided what the next step will be to getting to your goal.  What you need to do, who you need to speak to and put a date on the action – when will this be achieved by?

Goal Summary

Okay, so imagine… In ten years time, how would you like to be living?  If you were to look back at this decade what would you like to be able to say you’d achieved, ticked off your dream list or experienced?   You’ll be ten years older… go on, you can do the maths.  I heard something recently that really got me thinking – he said, imagine you’re about to meet your maker – you’re standing at the gates of heaven and the angel says to you “Wow, I’ve heard about the Great Wall of China, the pyramids of Egypt, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Stonehenge, Grand Canyon! Wow what are they like?” and you turn to him and say “Oh I don’t know, I never went there… but I can tell you what happened on EastEnders last week!”

You might be thinking “I’d rather just see what happens in life and watch EastEnders” or you could be thinking “How could Ali help me achieve my goals?” “What benefits are there if Ali coaches me?  Will I get results?” “Being accountable would definitely help me”.  Message me and we can arrange a complimentary telephone coaching session to get you on track or email me ali@alisoleil.com.

Words from my previous clients:

‘What is special about Ali’s coaching is her gentle and compassionate approach, along with her perceptive and intuitive insights. Through her support and her powerful questioning, I have been able to see more clearly and be more empowered. I would thoroughly recommend her to anyone who wants to make deep and significant changes in their lives. Thank you Ali for all your help!’   Hilary Reeves

‘Ali is a wonderful, sensitive and compassionate coach and friend. She has helped me to get back in touch with my self worth and talents when I had lost sight of them, spending many years at home looking after my family. I now feel ready to move on to the next stage of my life and I am very grateful to Ali for helping me find the way.’  Chris Horner

‘Ali has a great manner about her.  She is patient and easy to talk to and really helped me to think about my priorities and focus in life’  Ros Kitson

Synergy and support

Posted in Networking, Perfect Days.

Oh what a lovely day I’ve had… this morning I popped along to my favorite shop – John Lewis for an informal ladies networking monthly event called Cappuccino Connections.  It’s organised by Athena Networking group and locally about 40 women met for a natter and networking… oh and a cappuccino or something.  It’s so great to meet so many like minded people who are interested in what you do and to share their business story.  There seems to be such synergy between so many of us.  I’ve learned along the way how important it is to surround myself with a supportive peer group.  Sometimes when we share our dreams and goals with our friends and family their response can truly cause us to burst our bubble (we’re responsible for our own thoughts and decisions to take on board other peoples negative comments).  We allow our dream to die – or we can put on the back burner for another time.  I’ve certainly done this in the past.  Often those closest to us do not want us to change because this could ultimately change the relationship we share – or they do not want us to fail… so lovingly would rather keep us in our place.  Being part of a supportive network provides not only momentum for progression by being an encouraging sounding board - but also can give some leads to help establish the business.  Having fellow coaches to support and believe in me and my goals makes the journey even more exciting and the ride smoother.

Who do you surround yourself with?  How does your peer group support you?  How determined are you to reach your goals?  – How unshakable are they?

I’ve travelled up to Birmingham this afternoon on the train.  It’s my second time ever being in this city.  It feels vibrant and looks colourful.  Tomorrow I am going to Jo Cameron’s Women on Their Way conference – I can’t wait.. it promises to be a fabulous event with lots of inspiring speakers and great workshops.  I’m hoping to build my peer group here too… how great will it be to have new friends in another city?:)  Wonderful!  So I’m off to sleep now dreaming of my goals, feeling grateful for my friends, family, peers and coaches… and aptly I’m staying in a hotel called Nite Nite! Night all :)

Feeling productive

Posted in Perfect Days.

You know those days where you feel really productive and you’ve so much energy to get on and get all those jobs done that have been hanging about?  Well, today is one of those days for me…. and I’m feeling good – as Nina Simone said once or twice!  I guess, my younger daughter wasn’t too impressed about my recent painting purchase as we are working towards our re-location to the seaside… and its money we could be putting towards the big push… mmm… she could be right.  So I’m more focused and more determined than ever to achieve this goal… June 2010 Brighton here we come!

I’ve decided to produce some raising self esteem and goal setting workshops for women – under my www.daringdamsels.com name.  Today I’ve produced the rough outline of the day, what message I’m going to be conveying, who my market audience will be and how I will let them know all about it!  Oh, exciting times!!!  I’ve been contacting various venues to get prices for rooms to hire, this is a happening thing baby!

Isn’t it great when a plan comes together?  This is a big leap out of my comfort zone and a leap out of my own way – and I can’t wait! I’m walking the talk and pushing myself even further.  Someone told me that our comfort zone is like a balloon… once you’ve inflated it, it never returns to the original size… so here goes!

What could you do which would stretch your comfort zone?  What would it mean to you to achieve this?  When are you going to decide to go for it? :)

Dreams v Reality = Adventure Zone

Posted in Personal Development.

So, for years now… my girls and I have imagined living in Brighton.  Living within a city for the first time – a place so diverse and alive.  And by the seaside… I love the sea, having always lived one hour 30 mins from the nearest coastal spot, it’s a novelty and gives me a rush of energy and new perspectives when I see it.

We have sat countless times on the pebble beach looking out on the twinkling sea which always draws us close.   We conjure up whilst we much our sandwiches (actually we have been known to buy a box of chocolates and consume them on the beach too! I digress) how life could be living there.  We’ve even imagined running a small boutique hotel on the sea front - my younger daughter having picked out an old hotel, looking like it needs a new lease of life and some love put into it.  But really, I think living in Brighton as a life coach/NLP Practitioner would be fabulous – afterall, with the wonders of the internet and telephone – I can coach anywhere!

A close friend of mine suggested that ‘Brighton is the grave yard of ambition’.  At the time, I was a little disgruntled – to his obvious amusement… however on reflection – that makes Brighton the perfect place to be a coach.  There are people all over the world - not just Brighton who have had dreams but who have been talked out of them and they lie dormant waiting to see daylight once more.  I’d love to move to Brighton and assist people with evoking their dreams and making them reality – how fabulous would that be?

So, my dream… to move to Brighton June 2010 with my daughter who is 16 years old.  My elder daughter will be spreading her wings and will be off to Uni or another path – so will not be living with us then.

In order to achieve this dream – I need to pull out all the stops.  It feels daunting right now, but I know that is just my unconscious mind trying to protect me – keep me in my comfort zone.  So I must push through this barrier and break into my adventure zone…

My daughter is so excited about making this dream a reality; so this week we have been to Brighton to the sixth form college’s open evening.  Afterall, you have to fake it til you make it, right?  By going to the open evening, we have set our intention… we have made a commitment to ourselves to make this dream our reality.  Soon after the drama of finding somewhere to park we walked up some roads towards the college.  It was a magical experience.  We looked at the long white terraces of houses and flats and wondered which one we’d be living in.  It’s an exciting feeling moving to the unknown.  I can feel the excitement but I can also feel the resistance… it feels slightly scary, but that’s a good thing – it means I know I can do it and it’s out of my comfort zone.

I have made a dream board with some pictures of Brighton, some seaside pictures, I have the sound of the sea and the cry of the seagulls in my head and the taste of crepes from the pier in my memory… it’s all about focusing on what you want – really feeling it as if you have it already.  It’s about setting the date of when you know you’ve achieved it, setting steps to reach the goal, committing and taking action!

What are your dreams?  How committed are you to making them your reality?  How does breaking into your ‘adventure zone’ make you feel?  What difference to your life will it make when you’ve achieve your goal?  What will happen if you don’t?  What’s the first step you need to take? If you need some help with achieving your goal – message me :)
